SINGAPORE – A man was allegedly caught on CCTV removing a jacket from a mannequin at a shop in Jewel Changi Airport and leaving without making payment.

A woman was similarly caught allegedly taking a bottle of perfume from a shop in Changi Airport without paying.

They are set to be charged in court on Aug 25.

In a statement on Aug 24, the police said the 26-year-old man had taken a $350 blue denim jacket from a mannequin in a shop in Jewel on Aug 14 and left without paying.

A retail assistant later noticed the jacket missing from a display mannequin.

The police said they were alerted to the theft at about 6.35pm on the day of the incident.

CCTV footage showed the man removing the jacket from the mannequin at about 3.55pm, before leaving without paying.

Officers from the Airport Police Division later established the identity of the man but he had already left Singapore.

On Aug 15, the man returned to Changi Airport on transit and was arrested by the police.

Separately, the 50-year-old woman allegedly stole a bottle of perfume worth about $410 at a retail outlet in the transit area of Changi Airport Terminal 1 on June 11.

The police said they were alerted to the theft that day at about 11.40pm. CCTV footage showed the woman taking the bottle of perfume without paying at 8.25pm, said the police.

With the aid of CCTV footage, Airport Police Division officers identified and arrested the woman in the transit area before her departure.

Further investigations found that the woman had also allegedly stolen another bottle of perfume, valued at about $400, from a different shop at about 10.55pm.

Both bottles of perfume were recovered from her, said the police.

The man will be charged with one count of theft in dwelling, while the woman will be charged with two counts of theft in dwelling. The offence carries a penalty of up to seven years’ jail, a fine, or both.

The police said offenders should not assume that they can evade detection simply by leaving Singapore after committing an offence.

They added that they will continue to work closely with stakeholders to prevent, detect and deter shop theft at Changi Airport.

According to the police’s mid-year crime brief released on Aug 24, shop theft and theft in dwelling were among the top crimes of concern.

Theft in dwelling cases increased slightly to 730 in the first half of 2026, compared with 726 in the first half of 2025, said the police.
